Once upon a time...
- Does astrology work? This is rather a rhetorical question.
First we would
have to define what actually it is we are looking for,
what we expect to
obtain. There is no uniform concept at the present (neither
among
astrologers or non-astrologers) and all existent ideas
should be revised,
amended or reworked again. To confirm this in any kind
of valid way, we must
also first answer the question: “what does astrology
represent today?”
- The question: “Do you believe in astrology?” is an
absurd one. One may
believe in religion, because religion cannot be proved
or disproved within
contemporary criteria. In this case, what is left to
believers is …to
believe. If we can establish an occurrence of just a
few points that can
bring a comparable interpretation, then astrology has
nothing in common with
any religion.
- What are these points?
- It is rather difficult to give an even sketchy overview
of this subject
and any attempt lacks either details or a more refined
description:
First, a personal horoscope is the result of a coming
together of two
individuals and is an outcome of their relationship.
A horoscopic pattern is
strictly the result of their predisposition towards having
a child, and
ability to bring this child to adulthood.
This pattern contains primary and concise information
about both parents,
their attitude towards themselves and a child, - and
suggestions about a
possible course of a following development (what we call:
a life cycle).
Planets are only, an imprint on the primary instinctive
programme and the
base for consequent subconscious responses. “…the pattern
of the stars is
inevitably reflected in you…” (Lyall Watson, Neofilia).
- If anyone who is trying to “read a chart” cannot see
these correlations,
he or she has not even the required basic prerequisite
one should have in
order to call ones self an astrologer.
- What is next?
- A horoscope (a person) is not suspended in a vacuum.
At all times we abide
by the influence of the environment (and how the environment
continues to
filter planetary influence). This is the background upon
which a horoscope
evolves, from the static picture of the instant (the
beginning) to its
dynamic substance.
- And what is this outside influence that affects interpretation
of a
horoscope?
- Each and every relationship which results in a procreation
will convey
some similarities inherited from both parents, grandparents,
family… This
begins from the subconscious choice of a mate, and in
a similar way the
selected timing of the conception and so on… Stability
and security of the
home environment here plays a major part. A child depends
entirely on these
rudimentary conditions till about the age of 5 – 6 years
of life. Any
potential disturbance that could upset this period of
life will be traceable
through the horoscope – an outcome of such investigation
will depend upon
the skills of an astrologer.
- The next stage of life follows biological changes and
the introduction to
the self-dependent way of life. This usually continues
till ages 13 – 15. -
In many cultures throughout the ages this was the end
of a childhood. In our
present-day social make-up and in, so-called, developed
countries, it still
continues as the very confusing teenage time (up to age
of 18 – 19).
Everything that is happening during the above years,
school, friends,
conditions and quality of life, will get imprinted upon
the horoscopic
pattern. Our surroundings will play the major role in
suggesting what, from
the personal “potential,” will come into being and in
which way (!). At this
point, horoscope interpretation will very much rely upon
the “art” of an
astrologer, knowledge expanding well beyond signs, symbols
and keywords.
- Here I may give a small example from my practice. –
Canada is a unique
country. It accepts and is trying to preserve cultures
and traditions of all
nations that take a part of, and participate in creating
this new homeland.
It is a “cultural mosaic” not attempting to favour one
ethnic input over the
other, nor to impose North American standards or select
people into ghettos.
For an astrologer this is a real challenge. He can have
clients from every
place on the earth, Germany, China, India, Russia, France…
you name it. Do
you expect, that interpretation of a chart will be only
based on signs,
symbols? Would keywords be the same?
- What about an event chart or the electional horoscope?
- Like living on a noisy street, we learn to disregard,
to block out, some
frequently occurring typical noises. We respond only
to the more significant
changes in our background – whatever these changes may
be. The same is
happening with every other stimuli including those that
may come as very
distant planetary implications. In this contemporary
world, busy as it is,
with a multitude of interferences coming from all around
(never mind those
directly from planets), our response to transits will
be noticeable if they
form uncommon patterns.
>From the astrological point of view we also live surrounded
by such
confusing and “noisy” influences that we never have a
chance to experience a
“clean-cut” planetary effect. We may say, that every
planet in every
horoscope is at variance by the individual nature of
a horoscope. The
influence of transit is creating a very complicated dependency
from what is
both immediate and distant, from Nature and peoples,
and we have already
lost most of our ability to single out many of the signals.
- Over centuries the foundation for the interpretation
of any horoscope was,
in its essence, found through the emotional (read: instinct
dictated) nature
of the human. The astrologer was working on the assumption,
that instinct
dictates behaviour and that this is the inevitable fate
of our make-up. We
also cannot escape any mass effect summing up emotional
responses. We can
say with certainty, that this last feature is still valid
and easily
observed during any of the current upheavals.
The fragile factor of a human mind, and developing intellect,
is still
continuously being confronted with instinctive background;
Incessantly
interlaced with all the twinkling and ‘vibes,’ we may
be subconsciously
exposed to… Any attempt to decode an event horoscope
BEFORE fact, in our
existing messy world is equal to a shot in the dark and
all we can do is to
set up some assumptions. Similar story exists for the
electional chart. Who
is going to be able to collect all the necessary pieces
of the puzzle?! We
do the best we can. Our practice suggests that it is
better to avoid what
may be undesirable than to look for some assumed ‘best.’
- The use of the harmonic chart is far superior in many
ways when applied to
current affairs. The harmonic chart displays a horoscope
as it looks through
a particular aspect, with all inter-related planetary
arrangements and
midpoints that also supplement this with an individual
definition of each of
the separate components. The most common in use is 4-th
harmonic division
because this gives a picture where we may find nearly
all the horoscope
dynamics. This is also the best-known type of chart at
present. The aspect
presents a certain reference to subtle processes pertaining
to the human and
Nature. We choose the “family of the square aspect,”
but in reality every
distance between two points (on the horoscope) is an
aspect and the harmonic
chart will be a close-up of such relations.
My personal understanding and analysis come from forty
years of a busy
practice. The theory, if any, in this case would
be its final outcome. The
way I teach, and my school of “The Cognitive Astrology”
is trying to take
on the issue of this feeble and presumable factor of
the human mind that has
the ability to counteract imbedded emotional inner content
and responses
that reflect primitive instinct (and to contradict the
way readings were
done for centuries).
Astrology in the past was not concerned much with any
conscious or
productive development of man’s individual qualities.
Following an old
maxim: “Only the emperor is above the influence of stars,”
only those of
wealth and in power were free in doing what they wished
without considerable
risk or harm. I will, of course, not say, that today
we are all perfect or
that we will ever be, but chances are, that on occasion
we can avoid
yielding to unreasonable impulses.
- There remains one more subject that is rarely discussed
among astrologers
in the recent century. This relates to other, global
events such as weather
patterns or significant weather changes, earthquakes,
volcanoes, floods and
…major wars. I don’t know if one can any longer find
an astrologer who is
competent in this field (a speciality that was very popular
in the past). I
can only say that this subject may suggest further study.
– (However the
recent “hit” by the meteorite (registered by one of satellites)
in the area
of Russian Siberia (Budajbo, 24 Sept. 2002, around 05:00),
on looking
briefly, does not resemble the planetary pattern of the
Tunguska event.)
- I am aware that for many it would be more comfortable
if astrology was to
remain as a one of the myths. To me it feels sad that
much time is wasted on
non-constructive disputes (arguments) more related to
personal egos than to
the subject or verification of astrology. This wouldn’t
surprise me if the
disputants belonged to the amateur’s of astrology, but
it is hardly expected
from distinguished gentlemen, men of the science.
“…we still have much to learn from our past and the most
successful
strategies are those which can combine the best of the
old with the
readiness to accept what is new.” (Lyall Watson)

In view of the widespread intuitive grasp of the answer
to the above
question - amongst those familiar with both subjects
- I suspect readers
may wonder why I bother to raise an issue that everyone
seems to regard as
settled. Well, those of you who have been on this
mailing list several
years ought to be aware that at least one regular contributor
rejects any
connection between the two. I wondered whether
the explanation might be due
to a different cultural basis, but have not sought to
clarify this.
This time I will not use my own explanation, hoping that
a different one may
serve. Quotations that follow are from "Synchronicity:
the promise of
coincidence" by Deike Begg (2001). This is merely
one of a range of books
on synchronicity published in English, plus quite a few
more that focus on
coincidences. This body of literature illustrates
a common comprehension of
the subject that the authors share, that reflects the
like-mindedness of
comprehension of the subject amongst people with whom
I have discussed it
over the years. Despite the various definitions
and explanations of
synchronicity produced by Jung, that do indeed indicate
a variety of
interpretations of the term, our culture seems to have
embraced the notion.
This embrace is illustrated both by the body of literature
I have described,
plus the evident intuitive agreement on how the phenomenon
is experienced.
I'm trying to be careful and explicit in making this
point, in case
non-English-speaking cultures differ in this respect.
"Synchronicities tell us that underlying our ordinary
consciousness is an
intelligent, creative and infinitely sensitive organizing
pattern that
defies and transcends individual understanding.
When our intention is
earnest and when we imbue it with energy by focusing
our thoughts and
feelings and by visualizing the desired outcome, we generate
a force that is
truly creative and can usher in the future.."
This underlying organizing pattern has a creative capacity
and is oriented
to the future, it seems. We can use our attunement
to it to catalyse
development. This underlying pattern is a deep-level
environmental
relationship and an organic connection to the world.
Astrology is just a
way of interpreting it, I suspect.
"Our intentions, like synchronicities, are intimately
interwoven with our
purpose.. There is much talk today of our purpose being
a conscious
connection to other realms of existence, to worlds of
other dimensions and
vibrations, yet none the less worlds that form part of
the one world.. one
of the requirements that perhaps attaches to all purposes
is the alignment
of our small personal self with the soul; or, to
put it another way, the
alignment of our personal purpose with that of the soul's."
The soul was a thoroughly discredited notion back in the
'60s when secular
society was leaving christianity behind, but the new-age
movement has given
it new currency. Perhaps it serves as the conduit
to the higher self. Some
writers contrast the ego with the higher self, with the
ego being more
vehicular (self-promoting, identity & status) and
the deeper self more
connected to personal destiny, the collective unconscious,
and temporal
development. The former relates to the horizontal
& vertical axes of the
horoscope, the latter to the lunar nodal axis.
"Purpose is already encoded in our souls before we are
born and therefore
there is someone inside us who knows what it is."
It is a life-purpose that
the author means, though I guess more than one such may
be possible per
incarnation. [Learning seems to always have been
my main one, but I have
been able to spot various sub-themes involving remedial
work on character
deficiencies (reincarnational karma, I suspect).
I aspire to a grandiose
life-purpose of contributing significantly to the world,
but the prospect of
success seems to be receding!]
"Synchronicities are signposts to purpose." This
indeed seems to be the
general consensus. Noteworthy synchronicities are
often life-changing.
"The unconscious, through dreams and synchronicities,
will inform us of the
next step we need to take." This presumes we have
an agenda, a plan, even
if only a general scenario. The subconscious mind,
a reservoir, apparently
contains a deep-level connection to the rest of the world
that informs us.
"The word *kairos* comes from the Greek word meaning `the
right point in
time' and also `hitting the target'. Kairos is
that gap between time and
space where forces and circumstances flow together to
create, out of their
joint substance, something new. Time, space and
physical reality blend
together and the veil that normally separates the three
disappears. At this
point it is possible to catch a glimpse of the profound
wholeness that
underlies and informs our existence. In that moment,
when time virtually
`shrinks to almost zero', as Jung put it, it even becomes
possible, with the
right awareness, to take part in events in another dimension..
That is why
synchronistic phenomena have something `miraculous' about
them."
It is via some kind of temporal connection that we can
intuitively tune
into.
"The synchronicity inherent in astrology is one of the
most striking
examples of a hidden order of reality. A horoscope,
from the Greek *hora*,
'time', and *skopos*, 'observer', is a map of a moment
in time. It is a
graphic replica of how the sun, moon and planets were
positioned around the
Earth at a given moment. As this moment relates
to something specific,
e.g., the birth of a human being, it is a *synchronistic*
one."
"When my son was born, Venus was at the exact point where
Jupiter had been
at my birth and Jupiter itself was now passing over the
degree where Venus
had been at my birth. Astrologically, this combination
signifies a great
love between two people. Similar connections exist
between my horoscope and
those of my daughters. The same can be said of
the comparisons of
children's birthcharts with that of their fathers, siblings,
grandparents
and other members of the family. Every astrologer
knows of the amazing
synchronicities found between the birthcharts of people
who have a
significant relationship with one another."
Astrology gives us an intellectual perspective on our
deep-level temporal
connection (that synchronicities point to). It
is a tool that enhances our
capacity for timing choices and actions, and it extends
our free-will
relative to fate.
The above quotes illustrate how synchronicity is described
by a populist
writer. I thought it important to avoid the more
theoretical views of the
authors of various other books on the subject.
Impact on the course of
history these days comes more from accessible sources,
which seem
user-friendly to younger folk, not from theoreticians.
Astrology seems to
be regarded with interest rather than scepticism by the
younger generations,
so the most easily-understood explanation will prevail.
Synchronicity is
serving this purpose, and my intention is to demonstrate
how this general
view is seen. If it seems simple, that's because
it is. It is an intuitive
perception, but because it has become so widely shared,
its cultural
influence is greater than any alternative. We theoreticians
may prefer a
more detailed definition and explanation, but that is
beside the point.
"Some of the synchronicities described in this book seem
so far-fetched that
they are hard to believe. But that is precisely
the point. When fate steps
in, miracles are possible and circumstances will contrive
to bring something
about in a unique creative act. That is the nature
of synchronicity. Each
synchronistic phenomenon is a gift from the goddess Dike.
She held a
special place among the ancient Greek deities.
Dike was the way of the
world, the way of nature, the way things happen, synonymous
with the Chinese
idea of Tao. She ruled over the rising and setting
of the stars, the phases
of the moon (the moon was sometimes even addressed as
Dike), and she guarded
the courses of the sun and the whole cosmos. she
was one of the three
*horai*, which means `correct moment'. The *horai*
are goddesses of the
`right order to live by'. They bring things to
ripeness, to the right
moment. Their rule kept order amongst the gods,
between gods and men, and
especially between the two sexes. Dike means `just
retribution' and her
sisters were Eunomia, `lawful order, and Eirene `peace'.
These were the
gifts that the daughters of Themis and Zeus brought to
the world. Dike's
wheel moved through time, controlling the seasons and
ensuring that
everything assumed its rightful place."
The ego may limit our choices, inadvertently making us
captive to fate, if
we fail to heed the inner voice of the self.
"At times, however, many of us are introduced to the prospect
of another
identity, a being that transcends the ordinary self.
Poets and philosophers
have long celebrated this awakening, and every sacred
tradition is based
largely upon it. Saints and sages since antiquity
have claimed that we can
realize an identity beyond our personal history, a being
that spiritual
teachers have called by such names as *atman* (in the
Indian Upanishads),
Big Mind (in Zen Buddhism), "the soul at one with God",
or the "true self".
In this transcendent identity, which is connected it
seems with the essence
and divine source of the universe, we feel as if we have
discovered who we
really are." [from "God and the Evolving Universe",
Redfield/Murphy/Timbers, 2002]
Many authors have in the past couple of decades cited
instances of great
scientific discoveries produced by intuition, imagination,
and dreams
instead of scientific procedure. These seem usually
to be received as a
vision; a perception of the whole picture, a typical
production of the
right brain hemisphere. Mozart described in a letter
how his music came to
him: "the whole, though it be long, stands almost
complete and finished in
my mind so that I can survey it, like a picture, at a
glance." But the
right brain is just the vehicle for the process, the
channel. The image
seems to come from something deeper, beyond it.
"But transcendent knowing is not limited to artistic or
scientific work. At
times it comes as immediate knowledge about how we should
proceed in the
everyday conduct of our lives. We might call this
"precognitive" or
"anticipatory" intuition. It might come as a hunch,
"gut feeling", or image
of our doing something at a particular time or place
that ultimately leads -
as if by "synchronicity" - to new information, connections,
or situations
that enrich our lives and allow us to actualize larger
projects. With
intention and practice, we can learn to recognize such
intuition more
quickly and follow its lead. Transcendent knowing,
then, like the other
extraordinary attributes described in this book, seems
to come from a being
or nature beyond the ordinary self. And when it
is cultivated, it
increasingly reveals a higher Presence calling us toward
greater life and
action in this ever-evolving world."
These authors have focused on spiritual evolution, which
is perhaps the
suitable outcome of the consciousness-expansion movements
(mid-'60s to
mid-'70s) and self-improvement therapies ('80s) that
were the spear-head of
cultural development in the West before the younger generations
lost the
plot. Calling the deeper context God is easy, traditional,
and unhelpful.
Our deep-level connections may not go that far, at least
not necessarily
always. Neither is it merely the higher self (or,
if you are a new-ager,
the Higher Self). Synchronicity seems to connect
us to some kind of
time-stream, but it is a deep current that involves others
at that deep
level. It is at least partially, if not fully,
communal. Implications of
personal destiny, and a spiritual dimension thereof,
cannot be denied, but
neither can the collective context. The astrology
of the collective was
quite fashionable in the '80s, and social trends were
correlating quite
nicely with outer planet transits of the signs.
These days, seems to me,
the correlation is very much in question. Has the
rampant individualism of
current western society produced a degeneration of social
coordination to
the extent that the sign archetypes are no longer an
evident generational
affinity?

The Essential Commentary:
If we ignore Saturn's obvious dominance here for
a moment, we can see
different kinds of Uranus projections here, as the result
of the variations
of expressive emphasis performed by the Integral Individuality
(1.), the
pattern-driven, natal chart "psychical being" of the
painter, Francisco
Goya.
The context of one painting
spurs the expression of Uranus in the
form of a noun, as an object; and in the other, Uranus
is expressed like
verb--the action of the subject matter. In case
you missed it, Uranus it
that concertina object on the right of Fig. 1.).
There is no object in
Fig.2) which is typical of a Uranus noun, and similarly
suggestive of the
clock face natal position of Uranus.
The various expressive modes of a
natal planet's range of symbolisms are
dictated by the articulated planet's contextual role.
This is not an
either/or situation,
for apparently a planet can be (unfortunately, tritely)
likened to
a packet of a particular type of psychical "energy"
which can be seen as
divided and distributed as needed; but always limited
in its respective
proportion in terms of quantity. Thus the Uranus' potential
can be seen at
different times as predominantly a shaper of objects
(nouns) , and at other
times mainly projected as the action(s) (verb, or verbs)
we associate with
the
artists chosen subject material. (And here I caution
any assumption that
compares
the "language" of the II with rules with its English
language
counterparts....the rules are
probably different.)
Now, in Fig.2) the "he-goat" is the mix
of Saturn and Neptune. The
prominence of Neptune in this image is like the idea
of astrological
dispositor in that the Saturn energy is subordinated
by the Neptune in this
particular potion of the projection--this particular
joint effort which
serves the contextual aims of the image as a whole.
The Hopeless Attempt at a Conclusion:
So, we see a token Uranus object in one painting,
and not in the other.
When we
see a Uranus object, it probably means that Uranus' energy
was not
completely spent on the expression of (the meaning of)
the subjects
actions, as opposed to token shapes and colors, and their
interpositions.
Uranus' outrageous-ness in Fig.2) is almost all
in the verb form, (the
remainder in the
form of adjectives?) Throughout all of the artist's
paintings we hope to
find the soul-print
pattern of the Integral Individuality projected, but
it may be only subtlety
present by virtue
of being deeply immersed, and thus obscured, in
the personality-harnessed
"realistic"
forms of more photographic depictions.
Perhaps: Photographic realism in art
approaches the limits of creative
existence...the tempting portal of Integral Individuality's
possible escape
into
the *reasonably* assured immortality of the collective
"reality" ...where,
as to survival,
it hasn't a snowball's chance in hell...:)

The Optional, Caffeine-Induced, Incoherent Screed:
Astrologers talk about integrating
the hypothetically separate
features of natal charts, but too often fail to illustrate
the concept in
ways which seem, to me, sufficiently concrete.
Demonstrating astrology is a
lot easier when we apply to specific images, rather than
flimsy mental one's
we too often perceive as being unclear, out of focus,
or somehow just
outside our personal experience, etc.. We fail to see
the significance of
what most astrobabble attempts; and, fortunately, we
do perceive how it
justifiably fails most of the time. There is a huge egoistic
leap from one's
mere perception of astrology to any belief in astrological
analyses and the
subsequent "predictions" based on that wholly self-serving
application/perversion of the more idealistic and theoretical
psychological
concept; which , thankfully, has remained almost immune
to the toxic waste
of time by the fortune telling astrologers of the millennia.
Astrology is an art with a fragile but enduring
objective potential. We
divide Education into Arts and Sciences, not because
we want to, but because
we have to, in order to establish some objectivity from
the dubious
ego-inflating traditions of self-serving subjectivity.
However the Arts do
have a level of objectivity. We can move towards objective
Astrology by,
quite simply, showing the psychical "logic" of
expressed astrological
artifacts (the projected planet/aspect symbolisms as
observable objects in
the arts). Our human creativity produces astrological
artifacts for us to
find, catalog, and eventually analyze: surely it does
so more incidentally,
rather than by way of our conscious purposes.
Our own astrological
behavior is as autonomic as our pulse and respiration
rate: patterns already
"in us" emerge that are, in essence, as completely beyond
our willed
intentions as the characteristics of our own individual
genetic patterns.
Astrological artifacts are the creative products of our
Spirit, of our James
Hillman "Acorn", of our Integral Individuality, rather
than the mere
byproduct of social life--our personality with all its
interpersonal,
eco-political facets, and the desires or infatuations
which may serve to
eventually enable out individual projections. For
the most part, we all are
a pile of fractured and discarded astrological artifacts
waiting to be
discovered, that is, if and when we acquire the motivation
and the ability
to become our own psychological archeologists. But how
can be objective in
this most subjective, mysterious, and archaically ancient-seeming
realm of
the living self? Well, for better or worse, we
are what we create!
Employing astrology, we may scour the scant traces of
our own separate
existence. Like an archeologist of the self, we
can seek to find the
Integral Individuality, which like a pyramid in ancient
Egypt, has retained
its own structure over the seeming eons of this our epic
and opus, our one
brief but hopefully meaningful, personal, and possibly
individual, lifetime

It appears that the Exegesis discussion "Back Issues" have been truncated at Volume 08 Issue #016 (Aug 2003). Is there a "Current Issue," and if so, where might it be located?
Perhaps I'm mistaken, or have overlooked something.
Best,
Paul
